Free diving the Sardine run is a top ranking contender on the adventure bucket list. It is the largest shoal on earth and even visible from space. The sardine run migration reaches its climax off the coastline of Port St. Johns, where currents and the continental shelf pen the mega shoal within a short radius, creating a bait ball that attracts hundreds of thousands of predators in what is the largest feeding frenzy on earth.

Visitors are overwhelmed with sightings of thousands of sea bird rocketing into the water, to super pods of dolphins corralling the sardines into flowing bait balls by ‘bubble netting’, which are smashed apart by numerous species of whales and sharks and other large predatory fish.

The Tour consists of 6 nights and 5 days on the majestic Wild Coast, with accommodation at the Port St Johns River lodge. All meals, equipment and professional skippers / dive guides are fully included for the scheduled 5 sea days.

  1. Day 1 Arrival at Port St Johns

    On arrival guests will check in at the Port St Johns river lodge and spend the day relaxing in the beautiful surrounds of the Wild Coast.

    Take time to meet other guests and prepare for the next few days at Sea.

    Dinner that night will be something to remember.

  2. Days 2 - 6 Out at Sea

    Every morning guests will assemble for gear checks, safety briefing and to board the boat.

    The skipper will exit the Port St Johns harbour through the mouth, where you will enjoy a thrilling ride out-manoeuvring the waves.

    After exiting the mouth your professional skipper will take you to the drop point, where you will spend the day on the water with Whales, Sharks, Seals and billions of sardines.

    You will then head back into Port St Johns to relax and have dinner. Sharing images and stories around a couple of cold ones.

  3. Day 7 Departure

    Guests will be required to check out and transfers to the airport are available.

Port St Johns River Lodge

The Port St Johns River lodge is situated on the Umzimvubu River, nestled between two mountains. Its idillic surroundings are complemented by its world famous hospitality, where every guest is made to feel at home.

Guests are free to use any of the lodges facilities like the warm swimming pool, have a drink off the river deck or shoot some pool in the bar. There is also so much to explore around the area from challenging mountain walks, forest hikes or even a leisurely day on a deserted beach.

Accommodations are made up of chalets and B&B styled rooms. All are furnished with an air-conditioner and TV, with DSTV.

Meals are spent in our rustic restaurant with stunning 180 degree views of the river and mountains.

Your safety is our number one priority on this tour -with highly trained professional guides to ensure that you are always within a safe proximity from the action. The Sardine run is a mass migration of both sardines and predators, including sharks. We have been guiding this tour for a number of years and understand the behaviour of the various creatures and have systems in place to handle a variety of scenarios.

Flights to South Africa and to Port St Johns are not included in this tour package. Should you with for us to make flight arrangements then please contact us directly or include your request on booking.

Free diving is making use of snorkels and goggles – without the need extra breathing apparatus. It is a prerequisite that you are proficient in swimming with a reasonable level of fitness.

Guests who wish to dive on the tour are welcome to do so – and all equipment and air tank refills can be organised with us in advance.
